Clarification regarding series on beam.
It is still possible to connect a front aerial to a back handspring. On the landing of the front aerial, you put your feet together and jump off both feet to the back handspring. That works according to the rules for connection. If you do a back handspring to a step out so you can do a round off out of it, the gymnast usually puts the back foot down and then leans to the front foot to take off to the round off.
According to the rules for connection, to connect it, you must go into the round off leading from the second foot to land out of the first move, or off two feet. In this situation, that second foot to land would be the back foot, so that would be impossible. Because the gymnasts are going off the front foot that landed the backhandpring, which was the first foot down, you can't connect it. Say they did a back handspring to 2 feet. From that position, you can only do something that jumps off two feet, so you couldn't do a round off from that position. If they swing through the second foot of the backhandspring, so it becomes the first foot into the round off, that would work.
I hope this makes sense. If you are still confused, I will have to demonstrate for you sometime. Laurie Reid 6/15/07
