Judges 30 Responses

Input for 2012 - 2013 and Future: Compiled by Nola approved by Laurie 7/20/11

Clarification regarding comments: All positions on NAWGJ Boards must be elected if they deal with contracts, financial or posting of information; therefore, assigner(s), webmaster, treasurer - must be an elected position- this is a NAWGJ National Office Policy.

EDUCATION

For the past few years NAWGJ WA has provided practice DVD’s for your use. Should we continue this in 2012? Yes:_90% No:_10%

If yes what level(s) would you like?
Comment: Level 7-10.
Comment: Compile u-tube.
Comment: I really love and hate the DVD, they need to work and it would be better to have scripts. If scripts cannot be made then NO and use money for purchase of compulsory and optional books.
Comment: I really use them when studying for certification so I would prefer to save money for certification years.
Comment: Level 7 thru college.
Comment: Level 10.
Comment: Compulsory if available and 9-10.

STATE MEETS

NAWGJ has continually supported 4-judge panels for state meets. It is against R&P for 4-judge panels at level 4. Do you support 4-judge panels for:

Fall State: 30%__No 70%

5/6 Spring State: Yes: 46.4% No: 53.5%

Level 7 State: Yes: 57% No: 43%

Level 8 State: Yes: 60% No: 40%

Level 9 & 10 State: Yes: 80% No: 20%

Since 4-judge panels increase the cost for the host clubs, would you accept Championships fees for all state meets if 4-judge panels were approved? Yes: 81.5% No:18.5%

Do you have other suggestions to help offset those costs?
C omment: I would rather see separate 8 judge panels for level 7/8 and separate for 9/10.

Comment: We do not need 4-judge panels as we have very good WA Judges and our state meets do not need to have 4-judge panels. I do not feel judges exp. Are the largest esp. for hosts, equip. & rental larger exp.
Comment: Judges could do a better job of carpooling, some chose not to carpool, we should stay in hotel when it is reasonable to drive back and forth.
Comment: For compulsory state meets use one or two 5/6 rated judges per panel who judge frequently during the year, lower hourly rate and give them experience.
Comment: No mileage if below 100 miles RT and carpooling.
Comment:NAWGJ WA contribute?
Comment:Level 8 thru 10 are pass through meets, 4-panels are unnecessary expense.

NJC National Judges Cup

Should NAWGJ WA pay for one or two judges to attend NJC in Indianapolis 2012 and 2013 or allocate that money for 2013 education? (Approx. $1,000 to sent judge).

2012: Yes: 61.5% No: 38.5%
2013: Yes: 50% No: 38.5% Maybe: 11.5% 4 Judges No Opinion

Comment: Possibly help pay for someone to go to National Congress instead.

Would you be available to go as a judge (usually means gone Thursday evening to Sunday or Monday?)

Yes: 6 judges No: 4 judges Not sure: 1 - 19 no opinion on going

Comment: Draw for judge to go. One comment: Different judges should go.
Two Comments: Send judge only if we have the money, education should come first.

Currently we support a WA Level 7 team to the National Judges Cup costing us about $1600. We have done this not only to promote our gymnasts, but in support of our national organization.
Do you feel we should continue? Yes: 21 No: 2 Maybe 1 - 6 No Opinion
Comment: Need to conserve money for 2013.
Comment: support NJC by sending more judges and decrease $ for athletes. Interested in what money covers for Lv. 7 team and maybe USAG could assist w/ expense.
Comment: This is awesome for gymnasts!

New Judges
Support for New Judges (1-3 year having a rating) compulsory 5/6 and optional 7/8: Should NAWGJ WA?
Pay NAWGJ Dues: Yes: 15 No: 11
If yes: One Year: 10 Two Years: 4 , Three Years: 0
No Opinion: 16
Comment: Good Idea, but not now as need to save money for 2013

Practice Judging
Should we arrange a schedule of practice judging opportunities for new judges, a minimum of one meet, session on each event at each level?. New judges would be reimbursed by NAWGJ WA $10.00 for attendance at each session with a maximum of $40.00. Each judge would fill out a form requesting stipend, which must be signed and dated by head judge for each event and sent to SJD. Send to: SJD with-in two weeks of PJ. Reimbursement with-in two weeks.

Yes: 10 No: 3 No Opinion: 17

Comment: Yes, but must work with assigner for meets and placement.
Comment: Yes, if they are assigned to two-judge panels.
Comment: This is not necessary if two judge panels are used, if one judge panels, then yes.
Four Comments: Yes, good idea!
Comment: I do not think this is a viable option. PJ should not be done at expense of NAWGJ.
Comment: Beneficial to have one meet that would allow judges to receive the opportunity to PJ, possibly w/o compensation, but w/ a sanction judge could receive credit for judging with someone in a sanctioned meet. I would be willing to host a sanctioned event for the purpose of new judges receiving credit on a 2-judge panel, especially if local judges are used.
Comment: No, this is too much time to ask from a new judge, they might only be assigned 4 or 5 meets for the season.

PLANNING for 2013
2013 will be a Very Difficult Year!
Three new levels of compulsories and 5 new levels of optionals.
How can we best fund and plan for success and less stress!

NUMBER the following in order of importance to you! 1 – 5.
#1 top priority.
Ranking 1 thru 9

#1
1. Purchase all judges new 2013-21 compulsory DVD?Yes_____No_____Approx. $2500.

#2
4. Do as last cycle prepare notebooks with all types of testing and study material. Yes____No___approx. $1,000

#3
8. Purchase all judges the new compulsory book $50.00 Yes____No____ approx.. $4,000

#4
9. Purchase all judges the new optional book $50.00 Yes____No_____approx. $4,000

#5
5. Develop and send out quizzes via e-mail. Yes_____No_____

#6
7. Assist all judges testing registrations costs ($50.00) Yes____No____approx. $4,000

# 7
3. Send each board member to national workshop and they in turn must hold a minimum of five- three hour clinics in their area Yes_____No_____approx. $2500.00

#8
6. Assist w/ National & Brevet Judges course registration ($100.00)? Yes____No____ approx.. $3,000

#9
2. Pay each judge $100 to help with their membership expenses? Yes____No____Approx. $4,000#

Comment: I prefer that any benefit apply to all judges, not a select group.
Comment: Possibly give judges a choice of either compulsory or optional books & clinicians: Connie M. or Cheryl H. prior to rule changes, sessions need to be “geared” towards judge’s education.
Comment: Lots of PJ for 2013! - It seems like every time the rules change the congress sessions are some USAG “bigwig” reading straight from the code - I can do that myself - I want to watch routines and learn how to apply the new stuff.
Comment: I think it is better idea to provide the materials rather just giving each judge cash for testing or their membership expenses.

NAWGJ WA BOARD ORGANIZATION:

Do you have recommendations on the board structure? We currently have sectional reps that have assigned positions and two at large positions - assigner and web host.

Keep as is: Yes: 50% No: 30% No Opinion: 20%

Add an assistant SJD that is involved in: financial budgeting and tri-annual reports, fundraising planning and organization, judges certification, conflict resolution, & education (state clinic), with the intent of this person becoming SJD sometime in the future? If after two years of service in the position they do not want the job then another assistant could run?
Yes: 43.3% No: 23.3% NO OPINION: 33.3% including “a maybe”

Comment:The assigner and webmaster should be non-voting, stipend positions appointed by the board who serve at the pleasure of the board.
Comment: That would be good to introduce to full SJD job before taking over full responsibility.
Two Comments: web master have as a non-voting position.
Two Comments assigner as a non-voting.
Comment: have term-limit.
Two Comments: yes assistant SJD great way to get more experience.
Comment: All positions should be at-large.
Comment: Assistant SJD needs to be elected.
Two Comments: SJD should be expanded within current board.
Two Comments: No USAG liaison on NAWGJ Board that is why SJD attends their meeting.
Comment: add USAG liaison onto NAWGJ Board.
Comment: Okay but expand present board positions to cover assistant SJD & focus on judges education first and not athlete.
Comment: Not sure for assistant SJD could be good, but if they hate position it should not be mandatory to run, but something to consider.
Comment: I feel SJD can best decide use of assistant SJD.
Comment: Yes assistant, it would add continuity and give person perspective of complete position.

FUND RAISING:
2012-13-14 Yearly GOALS $18,000-$20,000. Presently we put out for bid two Co-hosted fundraisers: Candy Corn critique meet / optional clinic and the Holiday Express critique meet/ optional clinic.

Do you support these critique meet fund raisers? Yes: 96.7% No 3.3%

Compulsory and Optional athlete clinics? Yes: 96.7% No: 3.3%

Would you support NAWGJ WA having a Compulsory Meet at U of WA on Easter Sunday April 8, the day after College Regionals at the U of WA. Currently the facility is on hold for us. This would not be ANNUAL only this year as the U of WA is hosting regionals and their gym is already set-up. Agree athlete clinics as part of fundraising as long as the judges edu. and assistance occurs – there needs to be balance. Have critique meet on East side. One comment: Unfortunately, hard for me to attend to due a husband that is not around much, but I definitely think they're a good idea.
